SEO tips for small business: 12 things you can do this month to rank higher
Practical SEO tips for small businesses in India in 2026 — written in plain English, no jargon, no agency upsell.
SEO is not magic, it is a checklist
Most small business owners think SEO is some secret art that only big agencies understand. The truth is that 80% of small business SEO is just doing twelve simple things consistently. If you do them this month, you will likely see a real lift within ninety days.
Below is the exact checklist we use at Squaretrix when starting any SEO project for a small business in India.
1. Claim and finish your Google Business Profile
This is the single highest-leverage thing you can do. Add real photos, your full address, accurate hours, services and weekly posts. Reply to every review. For most local businesses, this alone moves the needle more than any other tactic.
2. Make sure your site loads in under two seconds on a phone
Open your site on your own phone right now. If it takes more than three seconds to show something useful, you have a problem. Compress images, remove heavy carousels, and make sure your developer is targeting Core Web Vitals.
3. Write a real, helpful page for every service
A common mistake is dumping every service onto one page. Instead, write a dedicated page for each service, around 600–900 words, in simple English. Each page should answer "what is this service, who is it for, what does it cost, why should I trust you, and how do I start?"
4. Use the words your customers actually type
Open Google. Start typing what you sell. Notice the suggestions. Those are real searches. Use those exact words in your headings, page text and image alt tags. Stop using fancy industry jargon.
5. Add structured data (schema) so AI can understand you
Schema markup is a tiny piece of code that tells search engines and AI tools what your business does. Local Business, FAQ and Service schema are the three you cannot skip in 2026. ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini lean heavily on this data when picking which businesses to recommend.
6. Get listed on India-relevant directories
JustDial, Sulekha, IndiaMART, Practo, UrbanPro, Zomato — pick the directories that fit your industry. Make sure your business name, address and phone (NAP) match exactly across every listing. Inconsistency is one of the most common silent ranking killers.
7. Build a small library of FAQs on every important page
People search in question form ("how do I…", "what is the cost of…", "is X better than Y"). Adding FAQ sections to your service pages helps you rank for these long-tail queries and is also eligible for FAQ rich results in Google.
8. Publish one solid article a month
Long-form, helpful articles compound. Pick one real question your customer asks every week, and write the most useful answer on the internet. Twelve such articles in a year will usually outperform any paid campaign of similar size.
9. Use real photos, not stock
Stock photos are a giveaway that you do not have actual experience. Real photos of your team, work, customers and shop signal authenticity to both humans and search algorithms.
10. Get a few backlinks from real, local sources
You do not need hundreds of backlinks. You need ten honest ones — local newspapers, industry associations, partner businesses and college alumni groups. Avoid any service that promises "1000 backlinks for ₹999". Those will hurt you.
11. Track three numbers, not thirty
Most small businesses drown in dashboards. Track only:
- Organic visits per week (Google Analytics 4 or Search Console).
- Keyword positions for your top five terms (a free tool like Search Console works fine).
- Leads or calls per month from organic search.
If those three are going up over a quarter, your SEO is working.
12. Be patient — but ruthlessly consistent
SEO compounds. Most businesses give up at the three-month mark, just before things start working. If you do the twelve things above for six months, you will be ahead of nearly every competitor in your area who is still waiting for "viral" social posts.
A quick word on AI search
Tools like ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity are pulling more and more local business recommendations every month. The good news: most of the work for AI search is exactly the same as for Google — clean content, schema markup, real reviews and real local presence. If you do this checklist, you are already optimising for AI search.
